Privacy Policy
Last updated May 25, 2026.
Screenmates is a social movie diary for iPhone. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Screenmates app, website, and backend services.
Information we collect
We collect information you provide, create, import, or choose to sync with Screenmates, including:
- Account information: phone number, display name, username, avatar, bio, profile settings, and account timestamps.
- Movie activity: watched films, diary logs, watched dates, ratings, reviews, review image choices, rewatches, tags, watchlist entries, liked movies, profile highlights, favorites, and related stats.
- Social activity: friend requests, accepted friends, blocked users, feed posts created from your movie activity, reactions, comments, and recommendation feedback.
- Letterboxd imports: the export ZIP you choose to upload, CSV rows from that export, matched movies, ratings, reviews, diary entries, watchlist entries, liked films, and the Letterboxd username found in the export when available. Raw import rows are kept privately so future Screenmates features can reprocess your archive.
- Contacts, if you allow access: contact phone numbers are used to find people already on Screenmates or identify contacts you may want to invite. Contact names and thumbnail photos may be read on your device to show your invite list. For matching, Screenmates sends contact phone numbers and local contact identifiers to our backend, where phone numbers are normalized and matched against server-side hashes. Contact matching is optional. We do not sell contact information or use it for ads.
- Photos and uploads: images you choose for your profile avatar or profile picture tiles. Screenmates only receives images you select for upload.
- Support and diagnostics: report topic, message, app version, device model, iOS version, and similar information you include when you report a problem.
- Technical information: IP address, request metadata, session tokens, rate-limit data, and server logs used to operate, secure, and debug the service.
How we use information
We use information to:
- create accounts, authenticate you, verify phone numbers, and maintain sessions;
- show profiles, movie logs, reviews, watchlists, friend activity, reactions, and comments;
- process Letterboxd imports and match imported films to movie metadata;
- recommend movies based on your ratings, watched history, watchlist, friends, and feedback;
- help you find friends through username search, suggestions, and optional contact matching;
- provide account deletion, privacy settings, blocked-user tools, support, and safety features;
- review reports, moderate content, respond to safety concerns, and enforce our terms;
- prevent abuse, rate-limit sensitive actions, troubleshoot bugs, and protect Screenmates.
This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
What other users can see
Screenmates is social, so parts of your profile and movie activity may be visible to other users. This can include your display name, username, avatar, profile highlights, movie activity, ratings, reviews, watchlist activity, comments, reactions, and friend-related information.
If you turn on Private Profile in the app, only accepted friends can see your profile and activity. Public profiles and activity may be visible to people who add you or discover you through Screenmates features.
Safety controls
You can report posts, comments, and profiles in the app, block other users, and contact us at support@screenmates.xyz for safety concerns. We may review reported content and account activity to enforce our terms and protect users.
How we share information
We do not sell personal information. Screenmates currently has no ads, paid subscriptions, or in-app purchases, and we do not use personal information for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking. We may share information in these limited ways:
- With other Screenmates users as needed for social features such as profiles, friend feeds, reviews, reactions, comments, and friend discovery.
- With service providers that help us run the app, such as hosting, database, file upload/storage, phone verification, and movie metadata providers. These providers process information on our behalf or according to their own terms when you use their services.
- For legal, safety, and security reasons if needed to comply with law, respond to valid requests, enforce our terms, protect users, or investigate abuse.
- In a business transfer if Screenmates is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets.
Third-party services and external links
Screenmates uses third-party services for things like SMS verification, app hosting, databases, image uploads, and movie metadata. The app may also open external services such as Letterboxd, TMDb, IMDb, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, or Messages when you choose related actions. Your use of those services is governed by their privacy policies.
TMDb calls are made server-side where possible, but movie poster and image URLs may be loaded from TMDb image infrastructure by the app so movie artwork can be displayed.
Your choices and rights
- You can update your display name, username, avatar, and privacy setting in the app.
- You can choose whether to import Letterboxd data or grant Contacts access.
- You can revoke Contacts access in iOS Settings.
- You can remove friends, decline requests, and manage blocked users in the app.
- You can sign out, which removes the Screenmates session token from this iPhone.
- You can ask privacy questions or request help by emailing support@screenmates.xyz.
Account deletion
You can delete your account in the app from Profile → Settings → Delete account. Deletion removes your account and associated Screenmates records such as movie history, ratings, reviews, watchlist entries, friends, profile data, feed events, reactions, comments, recommendations, imports, and related account data from the active database. Uploaded avatars are also scheduled for deletion from file storage when possible.
Some information may remain for a limited time in backups, logs, security records, or records we must retain for legal, safety, or fraud-prevention reasons.
Data retention
We keep information for as long as needed to provide Screenmates, maintain your account, support social and recommendation features, comply with law, resolve disputes, and protect the service. Optional imports and user content remain associated with your account until you delete them where supported or delete your account.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect your information. For example, Screenmates session tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain on your device, and phone numbers used for contact discovery are matched using a server-side hash. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure.
Children
Screenmates is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to Screenmates, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
International processing
Screenmates and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where the services operate. Data protection laws may differ from those in your location.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Screenmates changes. If we make material changes, we will update the date above and take additional steps when required by law.
